With a passion for landscapes, Monique Carr loves approaching the composition with more imagination as she combines expressive colors and intriguing textures. Carr’s style can be described as contemporary impressionism.
“When I paint a landscape, my focus is on creating a certain mood," she explains. "I want to transform a common scene into a work that is unique. I start my painting intuitively with gestural mark making, and allow myself a lot of play time with the paint and unusual tools. It’s important for me to have fun in the process and go with what the work itself is telling me to do. It creates a lot of happy accidents that are amazing in the final results.”
As she progresses, Carr makes sure she’s paying attention so there’s a good balance of line, shape, color and negative space. She explains, “I want to leave the viewers of my work with feelings of surprise and joy, allowing them to interpret each work in a soulful way that is uniquely their visual experience.”
Through September 15, Carr’s new body of work will be in a group exhibition at Carton Gallery in Banner Elk, North Carolina. She is also preparing for a solo show the entire month of October at Dare Gallery in Charleston, South Carolina. —
