Colorado-based artist Sarah Winkler captivates her audience with her new series of Rocky Mountain winter landscapes. Playing with habitat, texture and color, Winkler creates another fascinating body of work with tree lines, geological formations and the cyclical nature of mountain life. Winkler, who was born in the UK, works experimentally with paint, pigment, crushed minerals and unconventional tools to create her layered landforms that mimic the forces and patterns of nature that sculpt and change landscapes over time.
On February 19, her solo exhibition at Vail International Gallery in Vail, Colorado, will open. The show, titled Heart of the Mountain, is “a journey from the depths of the inner mountain to the vast star-filled universe. A shiny nugget deep in the heart of the rock waiting to be found. A soft light on the surface of an eternal steadfast presence of rock and minerals reminds us to be strong, patient and optimistic. Change comes sometimes suddenly, sometimes predictably, sometimes slowly through the eons of time.”
There will be approximately 20 to 25 paintings in the exhibition. The work glows with mica infused pigments, minerals and marble dust deposited into the layers of paint. The luminous color and dazzling textures capture enchanted snowcapped peaks under dark skies, plunge below ground into silver veins and gold channels, meander through frozen waterways and enchanted forest floors. All the while chasing that elusive light of the winter solstice.
The show will remain on view through March 5. —
