Artist Focus

Artist Focus: Jordanne

A quick decision in the Lana’i airport led artist Jordanne to Maui to become a painter. “After 10 years showcasing my work at The Four Seasons Resort, I decided to move to Maui and open my namesake gallery in a small historic town called Makawao,” says the artist of her Jordanne Gallery. “Now it's been close to 20 years of being a self-sustained painter. I paint using direct interpretation of the beachscapes and landscapes within my life here on Maui, Hawaii.”Perfection, oil on canvas, 24 x 36"

Jordanne was a plein air painter for 10 years, but after having children, it progressed her creative process to include using her photographs and experiences for inspiration. “Family time within the daily artist struggle is part of the fun as I gain inspiration during family beach days and outings,” she shares. “Now, I use my plein air experience and photos to create an emotional response both in myself and for the viewer. This in turn preserves the different places of simple scenes of rich meaning that creates the total experience of the island. The Hawaiian light is a quick study as the golden light only lasts for 30 to 45 minutes.”Beach Wave, oil, 30 x 20"

Her paintings such as Beach Wave, Wave of Time and Perfection are about capturing the golden light, or as she says, “the moment where the world seems to start to wind down and more breaths are taken to take in the peaceful surroundings...whether it be in upcountry, Maui or within the already serene beachscapes.”Wave of Time, oil on canvas, 30 x 48"

During Covid, Jordanne was inspired to paint more wave pieces. “Each wave takes a journey and will ultimately have to break in some way as another wave might be right behind,” she explains. “The motion of the wave break, to me, shows invincibility as the wave seems to continue on within the ocean. It is a metaphor of how I find the world to be at the moment...being willing to shift and change and stay steady all at the same time. Texture, brushwork and color are my focus in my work.” —
