Painter Cathy Carey has found inspiration in New Mexico, particularly areas around Santa Fe and Taos, areas rich in art history.
“My experience of the New Mexican spirit is a rejuvenation of my senses,” she says. “Near Santa Fe, I envision the softly rolling hills of brush, rising into the mesas, tinted terra cotta and tangerine. Winding around the Rio Grande I hear the river sing past the farms and orchards. I catch the scent of pinon smoke and sage, or roasting chilies and I am guided to one of many favorite restaurants for one of so many magnificent meals. Everything tastes so good there, is there magic chile pixie dust in everything? There always seems to be music playing, so much cultural and heartfelt music; passionate guitar, spiritual flutes, danceable salsa and swing swaying around the plaza—something inside me gets up and dances over the mesas and mountains into the deep blue heaven with clouds that look like flowers in the sunset. This what I strive to capture in paint.”
Carey was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Alexandria, Virginia. She was educated at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., and received a BFA in painting and printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Several years later, Carey moved to Southern California to continue painting and started a business in graphic design and illustration. She currently maintains a studio in Carlsbad and a gallery in Cardiff. She has taught workshops in San Diego and Santa Fe, New Mexico, and has taught at the Art Institute of California in San Diego. Carey's award-winning paintings are in many private collections worldwide.—
