Since childhood, Ingrid McIntire has taken great comfort in details and how color speaks to her heart. Many of her ancestors were artists, most self-taught like herself. “As a visual-spatial learner, it’s always been healing to use my hands to work through challenges by creating something,” says McIntire. In 2019 she picked up a paintbrush for the first time and invented her own mediums with the help of her artist grandfather Lynn, through a dream she had during the pandemic lockdown of 2020.
“My art is a manifestation of taking back my power and finding my voice not only as a woman or sexual abuse survivor but also as the oldest of 12 children,” she says. “My greatest inspiration comes from incorporating my love for nature and shapes and learning to love my inner child. I wish to be an example to others that acknowledging the parts of my past that were very ugly and chaotic was the fare to purchase my ticket to beauty and freedom.”
“A Modern Twist when Yesteryear is Missed,” is the tagline McIntire created for her work, which speaks to the autonomy to look back, whether upon the history of your country, your family or yourself. “My answer to do this gave me the strength to let go, allowing my natural talents to come to the surface and the courage to share them with the world,” she says. “Here’s to acknowledging the past. May we all rise together to create beautiful things.” —
