Art has always been part of Johanne Mangi’s life. “Since I can remember I tried to draw anything and everything,” she shares. Despite focusing on practical courses in college, she always found a way to include art. “I never gave up on creative pursuits, particularly drawing.”
Dogs and horses have always been a passion of Mangi’s, who grew up in Upstate New York where she was surrounded by both. “Whenever I get stuck working on a commission I don’t have to look very far for real life references,” she says. “This could be my extensive gardens, figure models or portraits with my studio group, Third Floor Studio.”
Whether human or animal, Mangi, who enjoys the challenge of intuitively interpreting her subject matter, is passionate about portraiture, and is trying to make time for her own exploration of the genre in addition to the select commission work she takes on.
Mangi notes that she owes much of her success to her involvement with painting groups that include well-known artist Richard Schmid’s Putney Painters and the historic Brush & Palette. “Immersive workshops have been a wonderful resource in my ongoing education as well as the generous support and instruction by artists like Richard Schmid, Nancy Guzik, Sherrie McGraw and David Leffel. They literally changed my life,” she says.
The award-winning, widely collected artist is now a teacher herself. “I’m just as passionate about teaching as I am with painting,” she says. “The never-ending learning is what attracts me. I tell my students to embrace this process as the glory is short-lived.” —
