Artist Focus: Michael Lam

Michael Lam moved from Hong Kong to New York City over 20 years ago, where he began to develop his own style which he calls “single stroke painting.” Drawing from a strong background in calligraphy, an art form he started practicing at the age of 7, he began to create pieces that were abstract expressionistic in nature but included by strong figurative elements.Untitled, acrylic on canvas, 36 x 72"Employing softly textured backgrounds, creamy pastels and vibrant hues, Lam’s works are not a realistic representation of what he sees but rather a form of emotional self-expression. His innovative technique entails creating an entire painting in a single brushstroke. In order to achieve this, one has to have mastery of paper, ink, brush and the pressure with which the ink is applied.

Lam compares it to the way musical instruments must be calibrated and synchronized to create an orchestral work.

Even when Lam is not painting using this technique, at the heart of all of his paintings is a dedication to the emotional elements of his subject to create meaning and emotional connection.

“My inspiration—and my goal—is the elevation of the human spirit to a higher plane of awareness, sensation and actualization,” Lam says. —
