As a child, Julie Crews drank water from the well her great-grandfather dug into the hard, mountain clay of North Carolina. She was raised in the house her grandfather was born in, near Asheville, North Carolina, and her feelings run as deep as her Appalachian roots.
“I am just trying to be a good citizen of the universe. I paint about that,” says Crews. For 26 years, the artist has held sacred space for her painting practice. She painted through the long years of five childbearing experiences, with two children now well on their way to adulthood. She painted while intermittently taking the courage to tell the laundry list that comes with little children to wait. “It’s never done anyway, only at a certain level of doneness,” she says. She painted when it was important to only herself. She keeps an ongoing list of titles for her work, among them Change Happens in your own Backyard, Why Do I Lie Awake at Night? and Maybe in a Month of Sundays.
Her solo exhibition I’ll Be Right with You, on view at Masur Museum of Art in Monroe, Louisiana, from August 22 through November 2, is full of charged phrases, often with double or multiple meanings. Currently, Crews is preparing for an artist residency on a 44-acre expanse in the heart of Alabama. Her work has been exhibited in juried and group shows at LeMieux Galleries in New Orleans, and the Vendue Hotel, in conjunction with Robert Lange Studios in Charleston, South Carolina. She is also preparing for her second solo exhibition in 2024, I Feel It All at Lowe Mill Arts and Entertainment in Huntsville, Alabama, which opens on October 2 and closes on November 23 with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. —
