Artist Focus: Ken DeWaard

Ken DeWaard has been painting in plein air for more than 25 years, winning awards at prestigious plein air events in Cape Ann, Easton and Laguna Beach. “My intention is to look past the obvious, getting to the essence and beauty of everyday places with their ever-changing color and harmony,” says the artist.

Light through the Sails, oil, 18 x 24"

DeWaard has grown fond of observing the play of sunlight on sails, a sight that inspired Light Through Sails. “I spend a lot of time in the harbors waiting for those sails to be raised,” he says. “It is usually short lived but very invigorating...Every morning after a rainy night I can count on the 1927 Schooner Olad to put up her sails to shake off the rain before they head out to sea. On a sunny morning, it’s absolutely magical.”

All is Quiet, oil, 12 x 16"

All is Quiet, on the other hand, speaks to DeWaard’s fascination with early evening nocturnes. He says, “The overall quiet blue evening with the warmth of the orange light from the lighthouse as well as the wonderful color of the white building in that greenish blue evening light was just too alluring to pass up.”

DeWaard will be featured in the group show Maine Stories at Susan Powell Fine Art from October 4 through November 16. See our full coverage on Page 100. —
