Susie Hyer’s representational and abstract landscape paintings will be featured in an exhibition at Moravian University’s Payne Gallery in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, that opens with a reception on October 24 and remains on view through December. Titled In Conversation with the Land, curator Rose Fredrick selected works that create a dialogue between realism and the abstract. The concept is two-fold. The first is to show viewers how realism is actually pure abstraction sorted in way that the eye more easily recognize the shapes as a landscape. Second is to provide a reference for understanding that abstraction is, at least for Hyer, always a conversation with realism.
In 2022, Hyer was honored by Moravian University with the prestigious Comenius Award for Lifetime Achievement. This year, they are hosting the exhibition to celebrate her success in the Payne Gallery at the university’s historic Priscilla Payne Hurd campus, which was recently designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The work in this exhibition is not a retrospective, but rather meant to be seen as a conversation between the artist and the land, between abstraction and realism, informed by a yearning for a different way to express the sense of place and Hyer’s role in it. —
