An Enchanting Evening

Scottsdale Artists' School hosts its Beaux Arts fundraising gala and art auction.

Scottsdale Artists’ School knows how to throw an art party. They prove it year after year with their banner event, the Beaux Arts annual fundraising gala.

With proceeds benefitting the nonprofit’s educational initiatives, more than 200 works donated by professional artists affiliated with the school, will be available through an online auction platform with bidding for artwork opening on November 7 and running through November 9. The culminating event, the Beaux Artsgala, takes place at the school on November 9 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Robert Moore, Autumn Grove, oil on canvas, 48 x 36"

Beaux Arts is a fantastic opportunity for those just beginning to build their collections as well as seasoned collectors, with original artworks selling at price points for all budgets by students, emerging and established representational artists. At the same time, you will be supporting the Scottsdale Artist School, whose reach extends far beyond the local community.

“This event is not just about purchasing art,” says Scottsdale Artists’ School executive director Trudy Hays. It’s about building connections, discovering new artists and expanding one’s collection. Seasoned collectors can add to their curated collections, while newcomers can begin their journey into the world of art collecting.”

Mary Qian, Lady in Green, oil, 13½ x 8"

The theme of this year’s event is “An Enchanted Forest of Fine Art and Fine Food,” in part inspired by a quote attributed to Kahlil Gibran: “Trees are poems that earth writes upon the sky,” and in response to signature artist Robert Moore’s painting Autumn Grove, in which vibrant fall aspen trees shimmer with life on the canvas, paying homage to the natural world.

Guests are encouraged to embrace the spirit of the event by wearing attire that reflects nature and the enchanting elements of the forest.

“I am extremely honored to be the signature artist for this year‘s event,” says Moore, who took his first workshops at the school in the 1980s. “I hope that my participation will benefit the school and serve as an inspiration for upcoming artists.”

Autumn Grove is a scene in southern Idaho’s Sawtooth National Forest that the  artist has known most of his life. “I am drawn to the challenge of simplifying the complexity of nature into a clear design and then filling it with harmonious color,” he says. “The aspen trees give me this visual material and I thank God for the beauty in nature.”

David Shevlino, Beach, oil, 6 x 8"

Guests will also have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for a bronze wildlife piece titled Trail Creek Brownies by signature sculptor Sandy Scott.

Hays adds, “Robert Moore and Sandy Scott are both amazing artists and instructors, each having a long history of teaching at SAS. Robert has been teaching with us for 20-plus years and Sandy Scott has been teaching at SAS for 30-plus years. They were selected for their talent, dedication to the artworld and their commitment to mentoring emerging artists.”

Other participating artist include David Shevlino, who has been teaching annual workshops at Scottsdale Artists’ School for more than a decade, and has donated a work to the Beaux-Artsevent for just as long. For 2024, Shevlino has contributed a small oil of a beach scene in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

John Schieffer, Marble, oil, 6 x 8"

Mary Qian, who has also taught at the school, donated the figurative work, Lady in Green. “I have an inside joke about not liking the color green,” says Qian, adding that she usually tells her models not to wear green in advance of the session. “The model in this painting is very new, and when she came in with this beautiful green robe, I couldn’t refuse to paint it!”

John Schieffer has donated a piece he created during a workshop he was teaching at the school. “In the demo piece I did my best to explain how I use light and dark values to create depth and, of course, how I work with graphite and paint,” says Schieffer.

In addition to the online art auction, there will also be door prizes, musical entertainment and a full sit-down dinner. For tickets and more information visit www.scottsdaleartschool.org. —
