Even after 30-plus years of painting, artist Ken Spencer finds it difficult to articulate what inspires his work and his desired outcome because, for him, that is something of “a moving target.”
“This amazing world contains so much to wonder at…so much that is extraordinary in its ordinary way,” says Spencer. “I suppose that fundamentally, I strive to create work that embodies truth and beauty. Those two lofty goals can be found in the simple as well as the sublime. They can be found in a rural pasture, or the streets of old world villages, in the deep natural forests and mountains, the urban canyons of big cities, and certainly in people of all kinds and the things those people do.
“That unbound beauty can be found not only in the subject itself, but in the way that subject is described…in the way the light enfolds a scene, the harmonies of color, the spatial relationship within design, or maybe the oddity of a thing,” he continues. “I love to be inspired by our world, then take that inspiration and seek to interpret it in my own visual voice.”
Ultimately, Spencer hopes his work will inspire and enrich the lives of his fellow travelers on life’s journey. “I hope it will add to the richness of humanity and contribute in some small way to the truth and beauty of our world,” he adds.
Spencer’s work will be featured in the Coors Western Art Exhibit and Sale at the National Western Stock Show from January 7 through January 26, 2025, in Denver, Colorado. —
