“Painting gives me a sense of fulfillment,” says artist Barbara Schilling. “It is an overwhelming wish to put the images in my head onto the canvas. Every painting I do challenges me to do another. To try something else. Make something better than the last one. Experimenting, trying new techniques, new colors or different subject matter is important for me to stay inspired.”
Although Schilling has explored many different approaches to making art, right now her focus is on creating palpable energy in her work. “I want my work to connect on an emotional level,” she says. “The best comments I get are when someone tells me my work makes them ‘feel’ the energy. My paintings start from a real place.” Sometimes she paints studio works from small plein air studies she has done on location. Sometimes she uses photos taken while hiking for reference. “But they evolve to a place more of my imagination,” Schilling continues. “It becomes about creating mood and atmosphere by pushing colors and textures.”
In recent years, Schilling has had teaching opportunities where she has been able to share her thoughts on creating energy or mood in art, with an emphasis on the importance of color. “I love it when I feel I have been able to share something valuable with another artist,” she says. Currently, she is leading online and in-person teaching events throughout the year. “I think art can be undervalued for the critical role it plays in the mental and psychological health of our society. We often overlook all the ways art improves and enhances our lives.” —
