Artist Focus: Sivananda Nyayapathi

Sivananda Nyayapathi draws inspiration from the natural world—the woods, waterfalls, rivers and sunsets—as well as everyday common objects like a table, chair or vase. “I like to observe and capture the way the light plays on all these objects,” says Nyayapathi. “I like to depict them realistically, to create an illusion of three dimensionality on a two-dimensional surface.”

For instance, in The Fallen Fruit, “the intricately designed table lit by natural light in the front room of our parental home in India caught my eye,” says the artist. “I tried to capture the play of light on the table and on the wall. The placement of the pomegranate on the floor helps move the viewer’s eye around the painting.”

Nyayapathi had given the white vase to his art students as an exercise to practice painting from life and the arrangement, with the lighting, inspired him to paint the scene himself. “The painting Reflection tries to capture the mood of the model,” explains the artist about his portrait. “On a quiet rainy day, the person is reading a book on philosophy and reflecting on her own life. I feel very satisfied that I could capture what I was looking for.”
