Artist Statement
"For two millennia, the Virgin Mary’s image has captivated the world of artists and theologians alike. Inspired by her many tender qualities and by a sense of mystery and awe, I chose to portray this still life under a blue moonlight with a candle light illuminating the miracle working statuette of the Virgin of San Juan de los Lagos. The Annunciation is represented by the bust of an innocent young woman, while in the background, shadowed by orchid pedals, is a della Robbia of the Madonna and Child symbolizing motherly love."

“All the objects in this painting are part of my personal collection, including the plaster cast of Frederick Ruckstull’s famous 1891 sculpture, ‘Evening.’ In this painting I wanted to convey a message of classic beauty and my belief that we are currently experiencing a new renaissance of artistic ideals.”

“As an artist, I am fascinated with reflections. I love painting still water with the reflecting sky while I also find portraits with mirrors symbolic. Th intent of this painting was to create something fascinating, yet simple, with different items projected in daylight. Th idea to place things on a mirror was extremely tempting and it proved to look intriguing with the window to outside practically reflected right on a table, underneath the copper and brass teapot, decorative plate, vases, and sprinkles of anise.”

Artist Statement
"This painting really transformed as I painted. My focus was the amaryllis and then the objects on
the table as support.I painted everything as I saw it, with some shifting of the fruit to find the right
balance. As I lived with the work I realized it needed something more. Through frustration I decided
to rework the background and table top. Once I let my imagination take over the painting felt like it
came to life."

"This was painted in my wife’s studio. I was in the studio and she had the doors open
to the view looking west. I was so struck by it and and immediately thought of setting
sunflowers on the table and paint them bathed in the afternoon sunlight backlighting the scene."

“As the sun dips lower on the horizon, the angle of the light changes, causing it to stream through windows and create a natural spotlight effect. The result is a breathtaking display of warm light and shadow that transforms the look and feel of space. During the Golden Hour, this vase with Gypsophila in the corner of the room is elegantly illuminated and every time I pass by it, I take a moment to bask in the beauty and wonder of the natural world.”

White Amaryllis
Jim McVicker
16 x 16 x 2 inches (L x W x D)
Provenance
Acquired by American Legacy Fine Arts directly from the artist
Artist Statement
“White Amaryllis’ was intentionally painted with the focus on just the flower and wall. I wanted this piece to capture the atmosphere and air that I was seeing within a very shallow space. All the grey and white tones had a lot of appeal to me while trying to make the white amaryllis pop against a mostly white wall.”

White Orchid

Provenance
Acquired by American Legacy Fine Arts directly from the artist
Artist Statement
“This painting of ‘White Orchid’ went through a number of changes over a couple of years. Again, I was thinking of the air and atmosphere in the room and trying to envelope the objects in that air. I often find the background to be the most difficult part of the painting to convey. Creating a painting where everything feels connected and appears to sit in space can be a challenge, but the effect is important to the overall emotional response to the scene.”
