The Drake Passage has some of the world's most treacherous seas. Sailors for centuries have counted their blessings after making it through alive. I had a chance to witness the water's power in this region from a 100-passenger boat on its way to Antarctica. For over 20 hours we endured wind gusts over 100 knots and 48-foot seas. The mountains of water made me think back to deckhands who would have clung to the rigging as their sailing ship creaked against the raging seas. A lone albatross was their only sign that life existed outside their tiny vessel.
