The barn seemed in disuse, almost as if still standing as a matter or historic preservation. I painted from the roadside, where the tree is actually what caught my attention.

Not me, of course. Lugging the day-pack and camera was enough. By September, the snow was gone, but the cloudy mists were hugging the peaks, elevation nearly 9,000 feet.

The historic hamlet rides a mountainside down to the tracks, where a great highway bridge spans to Virginia. Painted on an overcast day with a low winter sun.

Union Station completed the interior restoration of its Main Hall, its original design from 1907. The outside has remained the same, however, and it main feature is the Columbus statue. This view can be seen from across the street, sans the regular horde of cars and yellow taxicabs.

This is the station in Cumberland, Md. I was able to get most of it down on canvas before the vintage train (which offers tourist rides through the mountains) arrived—and completely blocked the view.

As I painted, a gigantic, masted yacht, which had sailed here from England, was towed out, stage left, bound for open waters and Florida (I met the captain-owner). It moved too quickly for me to include in the painting.

It also controls flooding (its original purpose, following one historic deluge). It’s also a favorite fishing spot—the theme of this outdoor painting.

I arrived at low tide, and the cutting morning breeze prompted me to paint from the back, where I had a windbreak. Call it Unconventional Motif No. 1.

Much of the acreage still runs wild, as with this open vista of meadow, wildflowers, and trees (and an eatery with patio and umbrellas). A hot, sunny afternoon, when even oil paint dries fast.

This deceptively quiet scene, gained from a sandy shore, masks the violent turbulence of the falls everywhere else.

As veterans says, when going too green, get out the red (its complement, which turns green toward black). During a local painting event, there was no escaping green with this house, however. The owner came out to watch an early draft. I’ll never be good at twisting arms to sell a painting.

Today, it’s a picturesque tourist haven (a National Park), with lots to see and climb, but a parking nightmare. On this morning, tourists still slept, and the early trains had passed through. When they do, hold on to your hat and easel.

And, no two keel fins on boats—the shark-like protuberance at the bottom—are alike, it seems. Painted at marina-heavy Solomons Island, Maryland.

I brought only my camera, and painted back at the studio. It falls 231 feet in two stages. Being a half-mile hike from the road, it’s often a summer scene of swimmers, families, kids, and picnics, but somehow keeps its virgin calm. I came very early in the morning, and was virtually alone.

This inlet with a tall stone seawall is the last of olden times. This genre is called Momento mori, or “remember that you will die.” Always worth remembering. Beautiful church graveyards, like this Episcopal parish, can have a similar effect.

This is perhaps the most ornate, sculpted setting of the Ladew Topiary Gardens in rural Monkton, Md. Elsewhere, sprawling lawns encase fountains and thick treelines that are cut into designs, almost as if a garden at Versailles.

Quiet on this day, its a seasonal shopping destination for home-grown produce. Maryland has an active farm association dedicated to preserving such locations, and keeping them in business.
