Sculptor David Crawford was born in in Walla Walla, Washington, and grew up in southeast Oregon. He received a bachelor’s degree in art from Eastern Oregon University. For Crawford, growing up living and working among cattle ranchers, art was not really the kind of thing that one took too seriously.
He initially created furniture to focus his artistic energy on functional objects. “But time would inevitably lead me to make things that had no purpose whatsoever,” he says. “As an artist, I’ve been inspired by people and things both in and outside the ‘fine arts’ disciplines, but I owe as much to my rural upbringing and surroundings as to any other influences for the sculptures I produce.” Crawford currently resides in Halfway, Oregon, with his wife Tori, where he maintains a studio and foundry for casting his works. —
